A Self-Evaluation on the Core Values and Academic Outcomes of the Journal

“Christian Education & Information Technology” in the Period of 2015 to 2017

This article has been prepared for the 4th continuous evaluation of the academic journal by the Korea Research Foundation. More specifically, it analyzes the core values and scholarly achievements of 117 articles published by the Korea Society of Christian Education & Information Technology (KSCEIT) during the three years from 2015 to 2017.

The criteria consisting of 5 core values and 15 sub-values for analyzing the Journa of “Christian  Education & Information Technology,”  are developed  by  the  editorial  committee  of  the journal of KSCEIT. The five core values of academic journals pursued by the KSCEIT are academic identity, hybrid, practicality, publicness, informativeness. Identity includes the study of basic theories for Christian education. The three sub-values that embody the identity of Christian education are seen as history & tradition, professionalism, and humanness.

Since  the  KSCEIT's  genesis  in  2000,  the  concept  of  hybrid  has become one of core values that the Society has pursued. The sub-values that embody hybrid are seen as openness, integration, and innovation. The practicality emphasized by the Society is the application of academic discoveries in the various fields of education. The sub-values are considered as application, realness, and efficiency. Although all academic disciplines claim to pursue a public nature, Christian education considers more preciously of publicness than any academic discipline. The sub-values of as defined in this article is about justice, equality and public interest. Informativeness is the core value emphasized since the establishment of the Society. The sub-values used for evaluating this category are shared-ness, digital contents, and cutting-edged.

The findings of this article are as follows. First, since the 3rd evaluation (2011), the balance between theory and practice of the articles published has been improved. The balance ratio between theory and practice of the articles was shown improving: in 2008 9:1, reached 7:3 in 2010, 6:4, in 2014, and 4:6 in 2017. Second, it is a great achievement that interdisciplinary hybrid researches were conducted most during the same period.

The professors who contributed to this journal are getting diverse, such as general education, social welfare, business administration, counseling, psychology, and public administration, and nowadays even professors of engineering and medicine are contributing their articles as well.

Third, it is another achievement that the scope of education field and practice research is expanding. As a result, in the ratio of educational  papers  in KSCEIT's  Journal,  there  is  a  large  increase  in unclassified education field. This means that there are a lot of papers dealing with a more inclusive field of education than those limited to the conventional Christian education field like church, home, and school.

This journal is one of the cutting-edge journals in Korean Christian academics and its fame has been build up and improving as a reliable academic journal enhancing public accountability. Finally, one of the greatest fears in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution  might  be  that  “humanities  will  no  longer  be  able  to study  humanness.”

The quality of this journal is a result of the joint efforts of editors, authors of the last 18 years, and critical readers. In the future, KSCEIT promises to become a leader of the Christian academic community and to raise awareness of these issues. We look forward to hearing good news from the fourth evaluation of the Korea Research Foundation.

Study on Maria Harris's Women's Spirituality Education

 마리아 해리스(Maria Harris)의 여성영성교육에 관한 연구

So far, spirituality has been studied extensively by men. There have been discussions about female mysticism since women have been strong in religious sensitivity and have experienced the mystery of God. However, most of the scholars who established spirituality as scholarship and studied it as a theological reflection on revelation and mysterious illusions were mostly men. This leads to the question of whether the existing spirituality, which has been studied on male-centered, can carry female spirituality, despite many differences between men and women. Since spirituality is influenced by socio-cultural customs, psychological development, family history, and so on, the spirituality of men and women with physical and psychological differences may be different. Also, the aspects of emotion and body must be taken into account in studying women's spirituality. In this respect, research on women spirituality by women is necessary.

Maria Harris is a female Christian education scholar who has formed women's spirituality through Women and Teaching(1988), Dance of the Spirit(1991) and Jubilee Time(1996). Her female, spirituality, and Jubilee themes have been less known than her other educational theories. However, she forms women's spirituality as a harmony of divine mystery and life on earth, emphasizing the body and emotions of women. The female spirituality of Maria Harris emphasizes the dimension of identity formation paying attention to the ways of lives as women, allowing women to transcend selves, expanding their understanding of chronological spiritual education. And it tells us that women spirituality education is a formative and have female characteristics and unique ways of spiritual formation.

A Study of Church School Teacher Education through Self-Reflective Journal

자기성찰 일지의 교회학교 교사교육 방안 연구

The purpose of this study is to suggest a self–reflective journal as a teaching method for church school teachers. For this purpose, the concept of self-reflective journal, educational effect, and method were summarized through literature review. The self-reflective journal is a method that has an educational effect that allows students to acquire practical knowledge by critically reflecting on their educational experiences, recognizing problems, and resolving them in detail. The meaning and effect of the self-reflective journal as a method of Christian education are summarized through the relationship between self-reflective journal and Richard Osmer 's education for devotion and Thomas Groome' s sharing praxis. The self-reflective journal method was proposed in detail according to the seven elements of education. Limitations according to qualities of leaders and motivation of teachers and the ways to overcome in utilizing the self-reflective journal method in the field of ministry were also suggested.

A Study on the Approach Method of Christian Education by Young-Taek Lim

Methods to approach Christian education are various both in theology and social science. In particular, educational areas in social science, such as educational psychology, educational engineering, and educational administration, enrich Christian education. Young Taek Lim asserts that a cultural approach to Christian education, along with theology and social science, is indispensible in the diversification of social and cultural phenomena. His educational purpose is to cultivate democratic citizens and thus he maintains that the cultural approach to Christian education helps people have a balance between being disciples of Christ and citizens in democratic society. It is because the meaning of being a Christian democratic citizen and its religious training is able to be formed on the basis of cultural foundation in its contemporary period.

Young Taek Lim stresses the effect of confucianism, colonialism, and millitary culture on Korean Christian education through the cultural analysis. Confucianism has ruled education and its system through tradition and authority. colonialism, along with military culture, has advocated bureaucratic economic policy and forced people in order to accomplish growth and duty-centered society. As a result of that, Korean educational culture has dehumanized people with achievement-centered education while causing the distorted educational purpose, which is focused on college admission. in addition to this, Korean Christian education has failed to develop positive structure for proclamation of the gospel, contents to deliver for religious knowledge, and historical and critical awareness.

Therefore, this article looks for alternative for Christian education through cultural approach and analysis. Also, it suggests critical culturalization with educational awareness, religious education in faith community, and practice of John Wesley's sanctification in the Christian educational field.

This thesis intends to analyze Korean confucianism, colonization, and military cultures with the critical culturalization suggested by Young Taek Lim in Chapter II. Based on culturual factors, it deals with critical cultural education (chapter III), educational models in faith community (IV), educational awareness Theology of 단(斷) and sanctification (V), and a new structure for Christian educational methods of Young Taek Lim (VI).

Comparison of Meditation

명상의 비교 연구

Meditation became popular among people because it is seen as potentially one of the most effective methods to heal body and mind. In this research contemplative meditation, transcendental meditation, and mindfulness meditation were analyzed and compared. Background, theory, the way of practice, and purpose of each meditation were analyzed in Christian perspective and some guideline for meditation was suggested.

The most prominent sources of contemplative meditation today are Roman Catholic and Trappist monks. contemplative meditation serves to help us discover our true selves centered in God.

Transcendental meditation is a classic Hindu mantra meditation in modern Western package. It enables a person to directly experience the source of creative intelligence and cosmic consciousness at the deep level of the mind and most calm and silent level.

The practice of mindfulness meditation encompasses focusing attention on the experience of thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, simply observing them as they arise and pass away. Mindfulness improves mental health, physical health, and wellbeing. Meditation needs to be investigated more in order to lead Christians to have sound doctrine about meditation for sound faith community.

The life-Context of Korean Young Adults and Christian University's Education

for Historical Consciousness

대한민국 청년의 상황과 기독교대학의 역사의식 교육

The young people of this age now call the Republic of Korea the “Hell-Chosen.” It is a structural class society that an average youth can not be succeeded no matter how hard he or she tries. So, Hell-Chosen   generates   the   theory   of   “Spoon.”   Dreams   are unrealistic for the average young, except for people from goldware and silverware class, which can easily inherit the wealth of some older generations. Dreaming is a luxury for average students who work part time or full time to pay back student loans. It is not unreasonable  for  them  to  be  “all-giving  up”  generation.  In  this situation, the university education is becoming a job competition compulsory school for entering large corporations. What should Christian universities educate young people experiencing such a crisis? This paper emphasizes that Christian Universities should educate students on historical consciousness and make them dream of specific Reign of God in this Hell-Chosen society. To this end, the article reinterprets the story of Joseph as a story of young people living in the Hell-Chosen. Like a Joseph, historical Consciousness encourages   young   people   to   “faces”   the   reality   and   “look ahead” as  they look at the meaning of  history in reality. By doing so, the are able to see the future Reign of God in their present life-context and make concrete decisions and actions to realize Gods  Reign.

Challenges of Adult Education in the Science Era:

S Church Praxis for Conversation as a Theological Reflection

The rapid development of science and technology has become a threat to human nature, rather than serving as a tool and means of providing more comfort to human beings.

In the modern day, people are failing to appreciate the value of being an active member, in this rapidly changing society.

There are two major reasons why this paper is significant. First, it restores the spiritual identity of the young adult Christians who lost their meaning in the 21st century science era. Second, it brings to light the conversation process that results in the mature Christian, and argues for it as a proper form of existence.

The S church Praxis offers a curriculum that teaches to live a harmonious life with God and people through critical reflections on one’s  blind  thoughts,  attitudes  and  actions.I  have  observed  and participated in such praxis as an educational activity that emphasizes ontological practice beyond simple epistemology in the field of concrete Christian faith education for the past one year.

The urgent need of this study is that the spiritual identity of the participants, once restored through dialogue, can serve as a basis for protecting the human dignity of the forthcoming Fourth Revolution era. This restoration has the potential to provide the adult Christian with an ongoing educational resource for the rest of their lives.

The ultimate task left to the participants of the S Praxis is the educational activity of living life purposefully, guided by concrete practical wisdom consistent with the spiritual identity of a restored mature believer.

Exploring Teachers' Use of Flipped Learning in Church Schools: Focusing on the Structural Relationship between Expectation, Perceived Usefulness, Task Technology Fit, Perceived Value, Satisfaction, Intention to Use

교회학교에서 이루어지는 플립드 러닝에 대한 교사의 사용의도 탐색 :기대, 지각된 유용성, 과업기술적합성, 지각된 가치, 만족도, 사용의도 간의 구조적 관계를 중심으로

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of teachers' expectation, perceived usefulness, task-technology fit, perceived value, and satisfaction on use intention of flipped learning in church school. In this study, we derived the variables that influence the teachers' intention to use the flipped learning in the church school based on the related previous studies and constructed a comprehensive model about the relationship between the variables. In this study, structured questionnaire was used as a measurement tool and data were collected from 271 church school teachers participating in flipped learning. The results of this study are as follows: First, this study empirically suggests that the satisfaction of flipped learning has the greatest direct effect on teachers' intention to use. Second, we could find out that the expectation of flipped learning in church school indirectly had the greatest influence on intention to use. Third, through the present study, the relationship between expectations, perceived usefulness, task technology fit, perceived value, satisfaction, and intention to use could be clearly demonstrated. Based on the results of this study, the theoretical and practical implications of using flipped learning in church school were suggested.

Multimodel Practices for Church Education through Religious Imagination: Based on Maria Harris’ Theory

종교적 상상력을 통한 교회교육 다중모델의 실제 :마리아 해리스의 이론을 중심으로

Interests in sensitivity, intuition, imagination and spirituality which belong to the human intrinsic nature are rising along with the advent of the Artificial Intelligence as a driving force the 4th industrial revolution. It is now important to seek for a new model for the church education accessible to nurturing holistic Christian, constituting both faith and real life into the harmonious whole rather than separating teaching from real life. This research, based on the teaching of religious imagination of Harris, is to propose a multimodel for the church education as a new paradigm for the church education leading to awakening to the holistic change and practice of life. For this, we firstly examined the principles of religious imagination of Harris as the paradigm of teaching and secondly searched for four properties of multimodel for the church education based on examining the principles, including the aesthetic experience of routine life, thematic participation, educational worship service, and educational pastoral community. Thirdly, the authors presented the teaching principles as practical media, where the caring in the spiritual community, united with God-experienced each single individuals led into the aesthetic experience, makes recreate the world. Finally having practical application in mind, multimodel practices for the church education is proposed, which is available to the church education field.

Neoliberal Globalization and Christian Justice Education for Adolescent

 신자유주의 세계화와 기독교적 청소년 정의교육 :포도원 주인의 비유(마 20:1-16)를 중심으로

The aim of this study is to present a model of Christian justice education for adolescent living in the age of neoliberal globalization. Neoliberalism is an economic concept that emphasizes market autonomy and efficiency. It can be understood as one of the characteristics of modern globalization. While neoliberal globalization has provided a wide variety of possibilities and opportunities worldwide, it has on the contrary deepened issues such as conflict, discrimination, and inequality. In particular, adolescents in South Korea are negatively impacted by neoliberalism. For examples, competition for entrance exams, educational discrimination and educational gap. This is a big problem because it worsens the educational level and resultant income gap between the rich and the poor. In that sense, social justice education is emerging as an important issue.

In this context, the study aims to create a model of Christian justice education for adolescent. First, the study researches the current situation of neoliberal globalization and its challenges. In order to posit a theoretical foundation for Christian justice education for adolescent and to view the issues of justice, it particularly focuses on ancient Greek philosophers, utilitarianism, equality, liberalism and communalism. This research also investigates adolescence on the basis of a developmental and religious perspective. Based on these, this paper constructs a model of Christian justice education for adolesent. It employes the parable of the Landowner of the Vineyard in Matt. 20:1-16 and uses the model of the 5R(Remembering, Revisiting the text, Reflecting critically, Reinterpreting, Responding) of Biblical education agued by Blair as its method of education.

This study contributes the followings; First, the study offers the understanding of neoliberal globalization and the theoretical foundation for Christian justice education; Second, it presents a concrete model of Christian justice education for adolescent; Third, it enables the practice of Christian justice as well as further studies of Christian justice education.

A Christian’s Reflection and Suggestions of the Korea Entrance Exam Centered Education System

한국 입시 위주 교육에 대한 기독교적 성찰과 제언

This study analyzes and overcomes the historical and social factors of exam centered education system in order to overcome the chronic problem of Korean education. Because of the exam centered education system, students are seriated and ranked according to the schools they enter. The exam centered education system has created an excessive private education market, damaging the household economy and reducing public education. Why is the exam centered education system in Korean society getting worse without being resolved?

The study has shown that the excessive perception of entrance exams embedded in Korean society's consciousness for a long time has been fixed for a long time in history. It started in the Unified Silla Period and emerged in earnest during the Joseon Dynasty, and It was strengthened after the Japanese Colonial Period. This has been established as a social phenomenon by strengthening the social selection function of education that makes the difference between wages and jobs. In the end, the exam centered education system has led to distorted educational culture that contains many non-educational elements.

Educational education focused on exam centered education system not only distorts and undermines the purpose of education, but also affects education courses, education assessments, content, and teaching methods. The Bible says that people should be wary of the desire for higher standards that are working behind such exam centered education system. The Korean church and Christians should recognize and repent that distorted greed is not reflected in education by re-conceptificating the entrance examination as a means of education. It is also important to know that a exam centered education system is preventing students from developing various talents and gifts created by God by making them a generalized hitter. God's creation was the creation of diversity. It is important to note that the assessment of the kingdom of God is not just a quantified figure but an essential assessment based on suitability for purpose.

The Korean church is important in that it can bring about changes in the perception underlying Korean society. It is not until the Korean church made a change of behavior that it handled the role of faithful administrator well.
